| We bought Mackintosh at the age of eight weeks in 1993.
Our first pedigree Lab, Sula - a beautiful black bitch, had |
 |
recently died of old age, and our other bitch, an elderly
cross-bred Lab called Sal, |
| was pining and going down hill fast. We thought
that a new arrival may revive her |
| interest in life and, having recently seen some
chocolate labradors (rather rare at |
| that time), we decided to try and find one to keep Sal
company. A little research |
| led us to a breeder with a litter of nine |
|
| chocolate puppies (quite a sight all running |
| around together!), and although we had |
| intended to buy a bitch, we fell in love with |
| Mac at first sight and brought him home with |
| us. Although a little unsure at first, he soon
made himself at home. Our old lady, Sal, |
| really did not know what to make of this young,
lively interloper! She soon came to |
| accept him, however, and we believe that his presence (and that of Bess
a year later) |
| really did give her back the will to live - she
actually survived another two years, |
| eventually leaving us at the age of fifteen. When
Mac was six months old we decided to try showing him. We had never done |
| it before, but encouraged by friends and
neighbours we soon found that we (and Mac!) really enjoyed the dog-show
world. |
| Unfortunately, Mac showed much more enthusiasm
than talent for showing, and he wouldn't stop growing - eventually ending |
| up rather taller than the breed standard allows.
His temperament, however, was and is wonderful - he's a real gentle giant. |
| He's getting a bit grey round the muzzle now,
and slowing up a little, but full of life and enjoying growing old
disgracefully! |
| We still take him to the odd show (he enjoys a
day out!) and he always attracts a lot of attention as a big, imposing and
|
| friendly dog. |
